Heidi - I agree, it's essential to have those difficult discussions about Israel and Judaism. In fact, they're essential to an ongoing sense of who we are. I've been searching out books and blogs that do this, usually from the left (an unintended consequence of my AIPAC, for sure!). Look out for a post on that shortly.

Coffee will be good. Let's do it.

(For those of you who are wondering, Heidi is working at a synagogue in my neighborhood, and I met her yesterday when I gave her a CD rack for the shul.)

Fascinating. My rabbinical school is spending this year focused on "Israel at 60," and recently we had a 3-day conference about talking/teaching/dealing with Israel as clergy. There was a lot of talk about how in this country we do Israel advocacy, not education, and how that has failed and the younger people (that's you, and me too) need something different. We in the Jewish community have to learn how to have the difficult conversations about Israel. I think confused is a completely appropriate response, and I'm confused too. I also think that in general, Americans like to see things in black and white. Look at our president, for heaven's sake. No grays in his world. I'd love to get coffee with you sometime and hear more about your trip, Josh.
